Wisdom 

“But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell?” (Job 28:12).

Where does wisdom come from?” Job 28:12 asks that very question: “But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell?” It then gives this answer: “No mortal comprehends its worth; it cannot be found in the land of the living. The deep says, “It is not in me”; the sea says, “It is not with me.” It cannot be bought with the finest gold,” (Job 28:13-15). Job tells us that only “God understands the way to it, and he alone knows where it dwells, for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. (Job 28:23-24). 

Proverbs testifies that wisdom was God’s first creation: “The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be.” (Proverbs 8:22-23). Job concludes that God “looked at wisdom and appraised it; he confirmed it and tested it. And he said to the human race, “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.” (Job 28:27-28). 

Proverbs 8:11 asserts the immeasurable value of wisdom: “for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.” As noted above, “It cannot be bought with the finest gold.” (Job 28:15). Yet, despite the elusiveness of wisdom and the difficulty of getting it through our own pursuits, isn’t it wonderful that God, in His mercy and redemption promises to give wisdom abundantly to all who ask for it in faith. James 1:5 says it plainly: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” 

And when you ask be ready to receive a full portion of the wisdom that’s from above. James 3:17 tells us what that wisdom is like: “the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” May your life be filled with such wisdom.
