Where’s Your Faith?
The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” Luke 8:24a
Jesus’ disciples were men of faith and had left everything to follow him. Yet, when faced with fear their faith failed. Here’s the account from Luke 8:22-25.
One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
Jesus used this incident to both test their faith and to help it grow. While he calmly slept with no fear of the storm, his disciples cried out in despair fearing for their lives. They had enough faith to call on Jesus in their fear, but not enough faith to face the storm with confidence knowing Jesus had directed them to go and was crossing the lake with them.
So, he asks, “Where’s your faith?” as if to say, “Don’t you know you can trust me even in the strongest storm?” Jesus calmed the storm to show them that they had no need to fear; they only needed to trust in him.
It’s the same for us today. We just need to trust Jesus and confidently follow where he leads.
Is your faith growing? Are you learning to trust Jesus, even in the storm?
