The Supremacy of Christ
“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” Colossians 1:15
If you’ve accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and savior, it’s easy to think of him as a friend and confidant. And that he is. We can go to him at any time, with anything. But we must also remember that beyond being a friend, he is also the supreme creator and sustainer of the universe.
Supreme means the greatest in power and the ultimate authority; the greatest in importance, character, and achievement; paramount and dominant. As today’s verse notes, Jesus “is the image of the invisible God.” Hebrews 1:3 affirms this truth: “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” If you want to see God just look at Jesus.
“For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.” (Colossians 1:16-18) It is the supremacy of Jesus that enabled him to provide salvation: “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” (Colossians 1:19-20)
Jesus is the author of life and without him nothing was made that has been made. (John 1:3) When you think of Jesus remember his supremacy. He is the sovereign Lord over all creation. Jesus is your friend, but he also deserves your worship, your devotion, and your obedience.
