The Lord Will Fight for You

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.  Exodus 14:14

What an incredible predicament the Israelites were in. They had been enslaved and oppressed in Egypt for many years and God had sent Moses to deliver them from their bondage. But Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, was not willing to let the people go. He didn’t want to lose his free labor. So, God sent a series of plagues on Egypt through Moses, and finally Pharaoh had enough and told Moses to take the people and go.

It was a huge group, some 600,000 men plus women and children. God led them toward the Red Sea.  Then Pharaoh abruptly changed his mind and went in full force to recapture them. As he approached with military speed the people panicked, feeling their situation had gone from bad to worse. But Moses instructed them to be calm and see how the Lord would deliver them as they followed him.  And God did it! He parted the Red Sea for the Israelites to go through and then closed it up over the Egyptian army as they tried to follow.

David took the same approach when he stood up to Goliath, not in his own strength, but in the confidence that he was walking in obedience to God. Here’s what he said: “All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” (1 Samuel 17:47)

We too can follow God with confidence, knowing that where he leads, he will provide. Don’t try to fight your battles on your own but look to him for guidance.  And always remember that safety is not in the absence of danger, but in the presence of the Lord.

Are you trusting God to help you face your battles?
