Staying Humble in Success

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18

It’s an interesting dynamic, isn’t it? We pray with genuine humility before God seeking his blessing, but then if he blesses us with success, we all too easily become wise in our own eyes. And that’s not a good thing, for as the verse above notes, pride leads to problems. Isaiah 5:21 says, “Woe to those who are wise and shrewd in their own eyes!”

This topic came to mind when I was recently reading in the Old Testament about Uzziah, King of Judah. Second Chronicles 26 tells Uzziah’s story. He was just 16 years old when he became king and it says, “He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father Amaziah had done. He sought God during the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. As long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success.” And as God gave him success, “His fame spread far and wide, for he was greatly helped until he became powerful.” (2 Chronicles 26:15).

“But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the Lord his God and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.” (2 Chronicles 26:16). In his pride he disobeyed God by doing something that only the priests were authorized to do. He may have thought that his success entitled him to this privilege, but it didn’t. He needed to stay humble before the Lord who granted him success.

Like Uzziah, we too may experience success as we seek the blessing of God in our lives. To the extent that he does grant us success, may we stay humble before him and give him all the glory for whatever we achieve or accomplish.

Are you humbly seeking God’s blessing and giving him the glory in your success?
