Standing on the Promises of God

“The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.”  Psalm 145:13b

God has given us many good promises in his Word, but isn’t it true that doubts, fears, and temptation can weaken our confidence in his promises, even to the point where we forget about them of fail to believe they are true or apply to us? Those are the times in which we need to rely on his promises the most. Listen to the encouragement shared in verse two of the classic hymn, “Standing on the Promises:” Standing on the promises that cannot fail, when the howling winds of doubt and fear assail, by the living Word of God I shall prevail, standing on the promises of God.

The Bible assures us that God “has given us his very great and precious promises” (2 Peter 1:4) and we can stand on them with confidence. In Psalm 103:8, for example, David testifies that “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love” and then goes on to comfort and encourage us with these amazing promises from that great Psalm.

Verse 10: “He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.” God almighty is not a vengeful God.  He is for us, not against us.

Verse 11: “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him.” God’s actions and attitude toward us are motivated by love.

Verse 12: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” When God forgives, he forgives completely. Our sins are expunged.

Verse 13:  “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.” We can approach God with confidence, knowing we will be received with understanding, mercy, and affection in the same way a loving father accepts his children.
