People Just Need to Be Encouraged
But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. Hebrews 3:13
Several times I’ve provided tickets to a friend of mine who organized trips to our local minor league ballpark for a nearby halfway house and women’s shelter and recovery center. My friend told me the trips were outstanding and that those who participated had a great time and were very grateful. I told him I thought it was a great idea and that I was glad he thought of doing it.
What he said next really stuck in my mind. He said, “People just need to be encouraged.” That’s why he did it. It was that simple. He noted that these folks were working hard to improve their lives and faced significant daily challenges, and a day at the ballpark was like a breath of fresh air. To have a fun and relaxing afternoon was very encouraging to them and spoke volumes of God’s love and compassion.
Scripture calls on us to encourage one another, especially those who are afflicted or oppressed. Psalm 10:17 says, “You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry.” And Isaiah 1:17 says, “Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.”
Think about people in the community where you live, or in your church family, who might be discouraged and burdened by challenges. Ask the Lord to inspire you with things you can do and say to bring hope and encouragement to them. Remember, God is pleased when we seek to serve him by encouraging one another.
Are there people around you who just need to be encouraged? Think of practical ways you can bring encouragement to people, especially those who are downtrodden or going through difficulty.
