“For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all your paths.” Proverbs 5:21
In one episode of a popular TV show the main character is questioning a murder suspect who says he has no secrets. “Everybody has secrets,” says the questioner, and when he said that it made me stop and think. It’s true that virtually every one of us has secrets; things we keep private even from our closest friends.
But, as the verse above states, God knows everything about us. Our ways are in full view of the Lord. There’s no use trying to keep anything secret from God. As Psalm 139:1-4 says, “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.”
“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:13)
God knows not only what we do, but also the thoughts and intents of our hearts. When we consider this, it should encourage us to pour out our hearts in honest prayer before God, confessing our sins, seeking his help, and being honest with him about how we feel.
It is very refreshing to pray naked, so to speak. That is, we should pray with complete transparency and total honesty before God, not trying to hide anything, but acknowledging that God knows everything about us, and remembering that he loves us and will faithfully guide us as we seek him.
