Blessings of Obedience

“You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed.” Psalm 119:4

   

The Bible is filled with God’s commands. They are variously referred to as commandments, laws, precepts, statutes, or ordinances, but whatever they are called, it is clear that God wants us to obey them. They cannot save us, for no one can obey them fully. We need Christ’s atoning sacrifice for salvation, but as I read through scripture, I am amazed and encouraged by the blessings of obedience, both blessings FOR obedience and blessings THROUGH obedience.  

Blessings FOR obedience are about God’s response to those who follow his commands. Psalm 103:17-18 tell us “But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children—with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.” And in Deuteronomy 28:1 Moses says to the Israelites: “If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.” In the next 13 verses he then goes on to list the blessings God will bestow on them for obedience.  

But we are also blessed THROUGH obedience. First John 5:3 tells us “his commands are not burdensome” but instead help us to overcome the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. Think about it. Obeying God’s commands leads us to goodness and righteousness. God’s commands promote honesty and integrity. God’s commands promote justice and fairness. God’s commands promote kindness, gentleness, forgiveness, and honor. God’s commands promote compassion and generosity, and they direct us to care for orphans and widows and others who need help. God’s commands promote the sanctity of life. God’s commands call us to worship Him alone and to love our neighbors as ourselves. God’s commands lead us to trust Christ for salvation. How blessed we are through obedience to God’s commands.
