Be Still
“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10
The universe is filled with incredible activity. Everything’s in motion, everything is moving all the time, and all in testimony to the greatness of God. Just in our little solar system, the planet on which we live is orbiting the sun at about 67,000 MPH. At that speed you could go from NY to LA in about 3 minutes. At the same time, the earth is also spinning around on its own axis at about 1,000 MPH—at the equator, and a bit slower as you go north or south.
But, besides orbiting and spinning, our planet is filled with non-stop human activity. Planes, trains, and automobiles keep us moving constantly, and for most of us it always seems that we have someplace to go and we’d better hurry so we’re not late.
Much of our hurrying and scurrying about is just normal to life and it’s good to be productive. But we should also take note of the verse above. Amidst all of our hustling and bustling, God commands us to “Be still.” Why? Because he wants us to know that he is God, the creator of the universe and the author and sustainer of our lives.
Above all else he wants us to know him and to have fellowship with him. He wants us to set aside time regularly to be quiet before him and to contemplate his greatness; to know and understand his love for us and his faithfulness to all who call on him.
“The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” (Psalm 24:1). Amidst all the activity swirling around us, take time today to be still before the Lord.
