What Does God Look Like?
“With whom, then, will you compare God? To what image will you liken him?” Isaiah 40:18
Did you ever wonder what God looks like? If you diligently study the Bible, you will find that it reveals a tremendous amount about the character, the nature, the plans, and the will of God, but it never provides a description of what God looks like. Even when he came to earth in the person of Jesus, the Son of God, we never get a description of his physical characteristics. It doesn’t tell us how tall he was, or the length of his hair, or the color of his eyes or any other specific physical attributes. About as close as the Bible comes to telling us what Jesus looked like is Isaiah 53:2, which says: “He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.”
There’s good reason for this. God doesn’t want us to worship any image of any type including an image of him, for then the image would become our God. Moses warned the Israelites in this regard in Deuteronomy 4:15-19: “You saw no form of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully, so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars—all the heavenly array—do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the Lord your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven.”
